It was a pleasure to make this spot. Electric Lite - an independent power company launching in Oregon at the time - wanted to show they cared about the state. We were to depict Oregon from urban to small town to rural to wilderness. We proposed a trip there: I'm from Newfoundland and Dirk's from Spain by way of Belgium, so we didn't have a very clear image in our heads. We went there with Dirk's partner Blanca and drew pictures as we travelled. Back in Chicago, we assembled the drawings in sequence and animated based on that. We created line work in graphite and colour fields in glass paint on paper, then composited it all in Light Wave. Although the drawings were VERY loose, the smooth arcing camera moves formed a flowing aerial voyage through Oregon.
